Our story - L'Hôtel Le Saint Jean
The History of the Hôtel Le Saint Jean in Montclar
Hôtel Le Saint Jean is the first building constructed in the Saint-Jean Montclar resort, which celebrated its 50th anniversary in 2021. Montclar was designed and built by the commune's local community and the Vallée de la Blanche. In 1959, Henri Savornin, Bruno's father, was elected Mayor. As a local resident, his goal was to combat rural depopulation.
With dedicated and collaborative teams, where each member contributed their skills, knowledge, or resources, they undertook the challenge of revitalising the local economy. It was a challenge well worth pursuing, as 50 years later, the resort is still thriving and evolving.
Bruno has always been engaged with the resort, starting by collecting stones from the slopes and cutting trees to widen the pistes. Later, along with a group of friends, his brother, and his sisters, he organised cabaret nights for the guests at the resort's establishments.
He learned to cook under the guidance of his uncle, Raymond Gras, who managed Hôtel Le Saint Jean in the early 1980s. Later, he met Maguy, who had come directly from her southern homeland. She also worked in the service at the Hôtel Le Saint Jean, and together they formed the perfect team.

They played a key role in opening the resort's second hotel, Hôtel Espace, before relocating with their four children to Corrèze. In Corrèze, Bruno worked as the manager of a Balladin hotel and ran the village tourist office. Meanwhile, Maguy alternated between working with him and her brother. After five years, they returned home, where Bruno became the manager of the Hôtel Auzet in Vernet, located 15 km from Montclar. During this time, Maguy worked at the Hôtel Le Saint Jean, which was being rented to holiday camps due to the absence of an operator.
At the end of 1999, a decision was made: Bruno and Maguy would take over Hôtel Le Saint Jean. With the help of their four children, they started making improvements by upgrading the painting, flooring, and beds—essentially modernising everything. Gradually, they brought the hotel up to date. In 2007, the hotel embraced the 21st century by installing a lift. The hotel underwent a transformation, with the rooms redesigned to enhance the guest experience. Their deep passion for their profession and Saint-Jean has also been passed down to two of their children.
Thibault, their third child, is now an experienced chef and co-owns a restaurant in Angers with a friend. Camille, their second child, has explored various opportunities but returned to the family business in 2020 with the intention of taking over when her parents retire. Don't worry ! You'll still be able to enjoy Bruno's delicious dishes for a few more years. Hôtel Le Saint Jean in Montclar is a true family story.
